This Friday we will cover -

REVIEW OF BALLOT ISSUES - I have a desire to discuss the issues on our Ballot. I have a great dislike of "news" organizations that Opinionate as opposed to just reporting. I'm no news guy, and have lots of opinions, But I want to keep my personal opinion private. So this will be an effort to "Report, so you can decide". Just like FOX NEWS! Smile

Pro/Con review of I-1033 - I-1033 is essentially an effort to force government to be more careful and thoughtful on how it spends money. 1033 addresses this on the revenue side, but does not address the spending side. Pro-1033 supporters would suggest that government spending and taxing are not appropriate, and cannot be controlled by politicians. Opponents will say that 1033 would cripple local and state governments with reduced revenue. Regardless, It is important for government and politicians to look at how, and what they spend tax revenue on. Our system is broken, and must be fixed with something concrete, and not just wished away with constant promises.

Pro/Con review of R71 - Ref. 71 is a vote to keep the domestic partnership law that provides legal protections for lesbian and gay couples and seniors who are in committed relationships. I assume the anti-R71 crowd mostly see R71 as an amoral effort to "destroy marriage", or as something not supported by regular Biblical teachings. Whereas pro-R71 supporters see it as a human rights issue, with everyone having equal rights. It's important to remember that this goes beyond lesbian and gay rights, and addresses seniors in commited relationships that will lose retirement benefits. I guess it comes down to - How would God, or your particular God, vote on this expansion of rights to gays, lesbians and old people?

THAT BEING SAID, people do need to look at the unfair advantages that government bestows on married people compared to single people. There is something inherently wrong and expensive about this disadvantage to those that are not married. And no, the answer isn't to rush out and get into a bad marrage so you can get a tax break.

Pro/Con review of PROP 4 - Prop 4 in Spokane is an interesting and difficult issue to think through. Part of it is very pro-local community oriented and could bring better quality of life to Spokane. But the unknown legal and monitary costs of Prop 4 are difficult to see clearly. Each voter has to decide the costs vs the benefits of Prop 4. BUT one thing that must be seen clearly is who is fighting against Prop 4. There is much to be said about the power of money and donations, and the abuse that local communities seem to face from corporate America.

FINALLY, FOR CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES, SEE THEIR DONATION LISTS - I happen to like most, if not all, of the city council candidates as people. They are all hard working, and care about our city. But there is great difference in their ideology as to how government should work. One of the best ways to get an idea about a candidate is to check out the Washington state PDC list, where all candidates have to report their elections donations and spending. Click on "search the candidates", then "candidates", then "local", finally "locality" = "city of spokane".

"OTHER" PARTY MEETING, NOV 17th, Tuesday, 7pm, Merlyn's, 19 W Main -

Thanks to all that came out last night for our 2nd meeting. We doubled in size even without a couple of our regulars. Highlights were having a city council candidate Mike Fagen come by and check it out, a name suggestion - "non partisan league...", and a refinement of the idealistic core goals of creating a "political" incubator with information and systems for new candidates, regardless of party. Another goal will be furthering the causes of campaign finance reform, transparency in government and elections reform. And we hope to do this in an inclusive format not distracted by discussion of divisive issues.

We will have the next meeting of the "other party" Tuesday, Nov 17th, 7pm at Merlyn's, 19 w main. This time we will spend about an hour figuring out how to get to the next step of creating a web site, and spreading the word. If there are any "Webby" people out there, we would love to have you join us. I'm interested in Blogspot and those sort of sites. And we will spend an hour just discussing any other ideas on how to fix the elections process.

Also, we would love to hear from any "card carrying" third party representatives to discuss their needs and ideas on election reform. Green's, Constitutionalist's, Libritarians and all that are all invited.

I made a facebook group, feel free to join and spread the word -

Facebook "makegovwork" group.

Our next meeting is November 17th, 7pm at Merlyn's (19 W Main).
