This Friday we will cover -

THE LESSONS OF HISTORY - The sad truth is that we never seem to learn the lessons of history. Even when laid out in front of us, easy to take, we ignore the past. And then we rush to forget even the newest of lessons, like the fiscal reasons for our recession/depression. We are on the verge of duplicating the mistakes of the last few year financially, and the mistakes of Empire when it comes to our war in Afghanistan. So let us wake up, and demand smarter, less greedy politicians that can actually understand the lessons of history.

80 YEARS AGO - THE GREAT DEPRESSION - Among the greatest disasters of the 20th century was the Great Depression. Here is and article about Ludwig von Mises, who explained the factors that lead to the great depression. Those same factors are what lead us to our recent financial disaster. Leading these problems is the unnatural expansion of credit, and along with it, the money supply. These were the problems of the 1920's, and they are the problems we face today with the government and the FED.

30 YEARS AGO - IRANIAN HOSTAGE INCIDENT - This week is the 30th anniversary of the Iranian Hostage crisis. The core of the issue was the interference in another nation's issues by our government. With US intervention, the elected government of Iran was replaced with the US backed Shah of Iran. This lead to hate and distrust, and ultimately the taking of US hostages from the US embassy. This leads us 30 years later still sticking our nose in another sovereign nations affairs. If we were really after Osama Bin Laden, we would not be expanding our troop count and occupying sections of the country. Nation building has never done us much good, past or present.

PS - Here is an excellent article about a former US Marine who has given up on our war in Afghanistan.

20 YEARS AGO - THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL - The fall of the Berlin Wall really brings up great memories for me. It was a good time in Spokane, and a good time in the world. If you want to blame the fall of the wall on Reagan, so be it. But remember, the power structure of the was depleted by it's losses in it's war in Afghanistan, and it's loss of financial power trying to compete with the US military spending. One has to wonder what the end result of our fiscal responsibility will mean in our future. BUT the gains on real freedom are still something that is worthwhile and good. But do human beings have the wisdom to spread freedom without needless greed.

THE ROLE OF PARTY IN NON-PARTISAN ELECTIONS - Bringing things back to a local level, here is an interesting article about the effects of "Party" on Non-partisan elections. After watching the latest elections, I have come to the conclusion that non-partisan elections are not really non-partisan. I'm not saying anything is wrong or illegal, but obviously local elections have the same "party" pressures as partisan races.

"OTHER" PARTY MEETING, NOV 17th, Tuesday, 7pm, Merlyn's, 19 W Main -

Thanks to all that came out last night for our 2nd meeting. We doubled in size even without a couple of our regulars. Highlights were having a city council candidate Mike Fagen come by and check it out, a name suggestion - "non partisan league...", and a refinement of the idealistic core goals of creating a "political" incubator with information and systems for new candidates, regardless of party. Another goal will be furthering the causes of campaign finance reform, transparency in government and elections reform. And we hope to do this in an inclusive format not distracted by discussion of divisive issues.

We will have the next meeting of the "other party" Tuesday, Nov 17th, 7pm at Merlyn's, 19 w main. This time we will spend about an hour figuring out how to get to the next step of creating a web site, and spreading the word. If there are any "Webby" people out there, we would love to have you join us. I'm interested in Blogspot and those sort of sites. And we will spend an hour just discussing any other ideas on how to fix the elections process.

Also, we would love to hear from any "card carrying" third party representatives to discuss their needs and ideas on election reform. Greens, Constitutionalists, Libritarians and all that are all invited.

I made a facebook group, feel free to join and spread the word -

Facebook "makegovwork" group.

Our next meeting is November 17th, 7pm at Merlyn's (19 W Main).
