CATCH UP FROM LAST WEEK, THANKS TO I-1068 AND PJALS - The last two weeks we had two great guests, Liz Moore of Pjals.net, and Renata Rollins from I-1068. If you missed either interview, you can get the MP3 on the top of the makegovwork blog from that week. So this week we are doing a catch up of the big news items for the last couple of weeks. And we will discuss the nature of Commerce and Capitalism.
COMMERCE, CAPITALISM, AND THE STATE OF "SUPPLY AND DEMAND" - Watching the mess in Europe (Which I predicted on this show), I am really concerned for the state of the world. It seems EVERYONE wants something for nothing. Rich or Poor, everyone seems to feel entitled. Quickly America must adapt a "meritocracy" form of work ethos. If we don't, we will go the rout of Europe with many working and producing for the sake of others. Now this is not a stand of Big Business, who also have abused the American system of graft and corruption. It is a statement of a need for rewarding (at a fair level) those that produce, and demanding more from those that need help getting back on their feet from society. So how does it fit in American politics to be "Fiscally and Socially Responsible"? It doesn't. Both the Republicans and Democrats are politically beholden to forces to help them get re-elected that keep them from doing the right thing. I wonder how this will play out? Do you believe in a Meritocracy where people are rewarded for their hard work? Is there a social contract in America?
TURMOIL IN GREECE, AUSTERITY?, WHAT DOES IT MEAN? - The Scariest word of the day = Austerity (because we all have to face it).I spent the day watching the turmoil in Greece, and the crash of the Stock Market. Can I say it? I told you so!! This is no surprise. And America faces the same problems if we don't fix our financial systems and Big business that abuses our country. We need to step it up and fight for transparency, financial responsibility and appropriate pay based on local levels. If we are not careful, we could be very close to our own government debt meltdown.
THE OIL SPILL, FIX IT, AND FIX THE PROBLEM - I haven't even been able to talk about the Oil Spill in the Gulf this week. Here are some basic questions with answers that will help to understand the situation. So much has been said about it, but the political blame game is really sick. There is nothing more disgusting than politicians and politicos using human suffering to make political points. So for now, my suggestion is to - Fix the problems, find the sources of the problems and fix those, THEN dig back and find and punish those that allow this stuff to happen. In that order...
DUMB REPUBLICANS FILIBUSTER PUBLIC DISCUSSION OF FINANCIAL REFORM - So the Republicans filibustered the discussion of the Financial reform bill yesterday and today. This is not the actual bill, just the public discussion. I guess they would rather do all the dirty work behind closed doors. But the Dodd bill is also a piece of crap, so what do us Americans do when faced with A corrupt two party system that only favors Big business and the rich?
MAKEGOVWORK FACEBOOK GROUP - I've had a Facebook group for a while, but have not pushed it much. Washington Public Campaigns Spokane
Washington Public Campaigns, Spokane Chapter, will be hosting local get-togethers with various interest groups over the coming months. The purpose of these events is to network and establish linkages between issues groups and public campaign financing. We believe that all social, political, environmental agendas are negatively impacted by corporate influence over our elected officials. We believe that true progress toward our goals is not possible without reform of our electoral processes.
Our first outreach will be to environmental groups, including local activists and community leaders. The meet & greet will take place on May 27th at Northern Lights Brewery.
It is our hope that these outreach efforts will help to create a strong base of support for campaign finance reform at all levels of government. Craig Salins, statewide Director of WPC will speak, along with several local speakers.
For more information about WPC, please visit our website at www.washclean.org.

PJALS (PEACE AND JUSTICE ACTION LEAGUE) WITH LIZ MOORE - With all the crazy things going on this week, I am still thrilled to have Liz Moore of PJALS (Peace and Justice Action League) on the show this week. Here is their Mission Statement -
We believe in a community and a world free from violence.
We believe the costs of violence and war are unacceptable.
We believe the public agencies and officials must be held accountable to our community.
We believe peaceful prosperity is possible.
This interview we are going to focus on the Spokane Police, Police Ombudsman, Incarceration nation and Perpetual War. I know I'm going to learn a lot, and I hope you listen and call with your questions.
TURMOIL IN GREECE, AUSTERITY?, WHAT DOES IT MEAN? - The Scariest word of the day = Austerity (because we all have to face it).I spent the day watching the turmoil in Greece, and the crash of the Stock Market. I-1068 (LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA) WITH RENATA ROLLINS - This Friday I'll have Renata Rollins on discussing I-1068, and their efforts to decriminalize Marijuana. Renata is the Eastern Washington coordinator for Sensible Washington, the group sponsoring and promoting I-1068. So this Friday we will be able to ask whatever questions you think have not been answered yet, and get more details as to how this will affect us. Questions included - Legality, taxing, health affects, comparison to alcohol, DUI and all that.
DUMB REPUBLICANS FILIBUSTER PUBLIC DISCUSSION OF FINANCIAL REFORM - So the Republicans filibustered the discussion of the Financial reform bill yesterday and today. This Friday we will cover -
EARTH DAY IS SMART BUSINESS AND SMART ECOLOGY - Today is Earth Day 2010. I'm surprised that most people don't get the need to recycle, be efficient with energy, resources and all that. It's important to remember that most energy sources and resources are finite. It could be a year or 1000 years before we run out of Oil, but it will all get used up some day. So the move to sustainable and renewable energy is an obvious need. And for all those business type capitalists out there - Being efficient and finding cheaper sources of energy is a huge cost savings in the long run. I guess if you only look a year ahead in life it might work, but business should be looking at sustainable controlled costs for decades and more. And we owe it to future generations to leave them a functional planet.
SPOKANE POLICE HAVE A LACK OF TRUST IN EVERYONE ELSE?? - Here is the story from last week about the local police not having any trust in city leadership. Again, do they not realize that the trust issue goes both ways, and there are serious reasons that the community has lost faith in them? And do they not realize that its not the publics fault. I guess I'd like to hear why they think people are not respecting them enough. Someone needs to have a frank discussion of the issues, and distrust of the local law enforcement community on both sides.
A SAD TALE OF THE SPOKANE OMBUDSMAN - This leads me into my meeting with the Spokane Police Ombudsman. Tim Burns came to the Riverside neighborhood council meeting yesterday and I got a very different view of the ombudsman than I had expected, and I didn't like it. I went into the presentation liking the idea of the Ombudsman, but left feeling he works for the Spokane Police, and is a booster for them. Everyone really needs to dig around and get the real info. He presented facts and statistics to us that didn't mean anything, but they sounded nice. I'm really concerned that our Ombudsman and the plan are not heading in the right direction.
FINANCIAL REGULATION MESS, THE FIGHT TO RIP OFF AMERICA - I'm really struggling with Obama and his administration. First the drop the ball on Health care reform, and now they are in the process of screwing up Financial Reform. At the core of the problem, Obama is proposing a system of "Insurance" for "Too big to fail" banks, and leaving the rest at the mercy of the system. He is doing nothing to solve the problems of "Too big to fail". And he is creating an unfair system of "moral hazard" with big banks having guarantees, and small banks with a different system.

THE TEA PARTY IS COMING, THE TEA PARTY IS COMING!!! - In preparation for my "Independence" speech to the Spokane Tea Party this coming April 15th, I've invited Kirk Smith, one of the Leaders of the local Tea Party, on the show to discuss, debate, confirm or dispel Tea Party information. I've talked to Kirk many times and found him to be rational and enlightened. So is there a disconnect between the public perception of the Tea Party, or is it as we see it?
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?, DECADE OF DESTRUCTION OF AMERICA - My first reaction to the Tea Party creation - Where have you been for the last decade? This seems a reaction to Obama and the Democrats. But with the War in Iraq, the Patriot act, the expansion of federal government, growth in Federal debt, and the reduction of states right, it seems that the Tea Party should have been out in force for the last 10 years.
PUBLIC PERCEPTION, ANTI-MINORITY, RACIST, HOMOPHOBIA, ANTI OBAMA? - The outward view of the Tea Party is the it's a mostly White organization. And with the public instances of Racism and Homophobia, there has been a feeling that it's a "closed" group. While each group is independent, it seems like there needs to be an effort to expand the participation to be more inclusive. But is that a reality to most Tea Party members? And does the Tea Party have a responsibility to respond to negative behavior by fringe members.
EDUCATION, MEDIA, SOCIAL ISSUES, SUSTAINABLE/RENEWABLE - One of my biggest concerns with the broad Tea Party message is that it seems to be Anti-Education and anti-science. I am a firm believer in the power of education to improve the quality of life. And to demonize education seems to be going backwards in the betterment of America. To see Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann considered leaders of the Tea Party movement is scary. Neither has shown any serious understanding or the world. And It was dis-heartening to see the Tea Party come out against the "Lights Out" effort at city hall. As a home and building owner, I am always looking for ways to cut costs, and be more efficient in energy use. Using science to better our lives, and "being smart" seems like a wise directions for our country.
POINTS OF AGREEMENT, FOREIGN WARS A WASTE, ELECTIONS REFORM - So why does it seem that the Tea Party has to be against EVERYTHING that the Democrats try to do? I think in a more rational environment, there are many points of agreement. The abject waste of American foreign wars and excursions comes to mind. And the obvious need for Elections reform and empowerment of people vs corporations. Why is everything a fight? It reminds me that Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neal always left politics at work, and enjoyed friendships outside the partisan walls. Where have we gone wrong?
WHERE IS TEA PARTY GOING?, PARTISAN, NON-PARTISAN, OWN PARTY - So what is the future of the Tea Party? How does one have a "Leaderless" group? I was troubled to get an obvious partisan Tea Party/Republican e-mail fighting against Patty Murray this week. There seems to be a battle between the core, independent, Libertarian foundation, and the Republican, Christian Right efforts to take over the Tea Party. Or will the Tea Party become a political party with a platform and candidates? Of course they will face the wraith of the Neo-Con Republicans as they try to keep the Tea Party under control.
MAKEGOVWORK FACEBOOK GROUP - I've had a Facebook group for a while, but have not pushed it much. Facebook is a great way to communicate to others, so I wanted to make sure everyone joined up if they want to keep up, and help work to improve things. This Friday we will cover -
AVISTA BONUSES AND DIVIDENDS = INCREASED BILL TO YOU!! - Here is the latest update on where your energy dollars are going. It's always nice to see that the management of Avista is getting great bonuses and dividends while you power bill goes up and up. You know why? Because they are a quasi public private enterprise without competition. One of these days we are going to see the light that Avista should be a publicly owned utility beholden to the local users and taxpayers. It's time to find politicians that work for your and I, and not corporate America.
BANK REGULATION? NO WAY. HOW ABOUT MORE RISK FOR YOU AND I? - Here is a scary interesting article pointing out that wall street and the banking industry is bigger, and dangerous than ever. The fixes of the last two years are a joke, and The Dodd bank regulation bill is designed by wall street to benefit wall street. Is this the way you want Obama and the Democrats (or the Republicans) to fix problems. If they don't take control of wall street and the banking industry, we qill quickly move to the next banking recession.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN INDEPENDENT, PLANNING A TEA PARTY SPEECH - I've been invited to speak at the next Spokane Tea Party event at the convention center April 15th, 4pm. I'm their "Independent" Speaker, and have 10 minutes to distill what it means to be an independent, and why I think the two main parties are irrevocably broken. What do you think? I was reluctant to sign on to speak at this event, but how often do you have a chance to speak to a different group, and make a change?
US CENSUS AND WHY YOU DO NEED TO FILL IT OUT (IT'S THE MONEY) - It's that time every 10 years where the US Census asks us to fill out the form and provide them with details of our households. I don't like to do it, and don't trust it, but right now it's important to fill it out. With things so bad, we need to get whatever Federal money is thrown away, and use it in our community. While I don't like the federal government, and how it spends money, it's the system we have, and we have to deal with it. The census also deals with how are representatives are elected, and we need to do as much as we can to control that situation.
AND FOR SOMETHING COOL AND DIFFERENT, CHECK OUT THE SISTINE CHAPEL - Listener Jason sent this link for a virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel. If you love history, art and architecture, check it out.

REDO FROM LAST WEEK - I had a guest last week, so I'll try again on these.
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE HEALTH CARE DEBATE? - I'm tired of the health care debate. I don't like what the democrats have put together, neither do I like the complete lack of idea's by the Republicans. But you know what, the Dems are in charge (because of the terrible job the Republicans did.)
MEDIA, NATIONAL AND SPOKANE - So what do you think of the local media? Does it do a good job? Does it do real journalism covering important issues? I'm not thrilled with the state of local media, but maybe I'm asking too much of it?
PARTY POLITICS, RESULTS COUNT, SO WHAT HAVE THEY REALLY DONE FOR YOU - I'm really tired of party politics. I haven't seen the national D's or R's do anything good in so long that I'm not sure they are capable of anything other than trying to get elected, and remain in power. So I ask you why is your party so good? What have they done for us in the last 20 or 30 years? More importantly, what have they DONE TO US for the last couple of decades? How about a ridiculous national debt with little to show for it. Frankly, I'm sick of they all. Time to support independents and third parties.

SPECIAL GUEST HOST REBECCA MACK (AND HER NEW SHOW) - I'm excited to have Rebecca Mack on the show this Friday. Rebecca is going to have her own show starting soon on KYRS. Maybe we can get her to give us a preview and discuss media in Spokane and beyond.
MEDIA, NATIONAL AND SPOKANE - So what do you think of the local media? Does it do a good job? Does it do real journalism covering important issues? I'm not thrilled with the state of local media, but maybe I'm asking too much of it?
HEALTH CARE REFORM (LIKE OR DISLIKE, AND WHY) - I'm tired of the health care debate. I don't like what the democrats have put together, neither do I like the complete lack of idea's by the Republicans. But you know what, the Dems are in charge (because of the terrible job the Republicans did.)

This Friday we will cover -
STATE & GOVERNMENT WAGES, WHAT IS THE TRUTH? - I think that Washington state and America is at a turning point when it comes to government spending and debt. Here is an article about Washington state wages. You will notice that it makes some statements about the balance between state and private wages. But it disregards benefits and health care costs. It also ignores education, teacher, police and fire compensation. Take from it what you will.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH OF GOVERNMENT WAGES, PART TWO - BUT here is a national look at real wages, benefits and compensation and the difference between public and private sector jobs. You will notice that the government sector is not facing the harsh reality that the private sector continues to deal with. Other than being unfair and unrealistic, this also leads to a reduction in the services like roads, education, safety that we all need to have society function properly. What will you do to make government live within it's means?
DID WASHINGTON STATE REALLY CUT SPENDING? - And when Washington state says it is cutting spending to balance the budget, is that really true? Here is an article about how Washington state spending is actually going up, not being cut. So this increased spending is the reason that the Democrats have voted to raise your sales tax and other taxes. Especially galling is the damage that these tax increases will have on the working poor and the very people that the Democrats say they stand for. If your part of the working class, who is looking out for you? And no, I don't mean the government unions.
IS GREECE A PRECURSOR TO WHAT WE HAVE COMING? - Greece is going through social gyrations because of the governments "Austerity plans". It's government has made terrible promises for its workers so they could retire early and wealthy. Sadly, these promises were not affordable or realistic. So now Greece needs to move towards a painful reality that we too will have to face someday soon. Workers will need to adjust, AND corporations will need to work with employees to bring honest balance to compensation.
I THINK THAT'S ENOUGH BAD NEWS FOR A WEEK. SO CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO - Here is a great "real" video that actually looks like a world of toys - http://vimeo.com/9679622?hd=1. Check it out.

SPECIAL GUEST HOST MOLLY CALLEN, ON EDUCATION AND BUDGETS - As you know every couple of months I like to have a guest host on the show. Usually this is a regular listener with their own idea's on how the world works. We may or may not agree on everything, but different viewpoints are the key to better understanding of the complex problems of the world. Molly Callen is this weeks co-host, bringing an excellent understanding of education and current education problems. Feel free to read her comments on the idea of "Children's investment funds" levy. I know there will be some hot debates on this issue.
MY BEEF - GOVERNMENT BUDGETS DON'T ADDRESS WAGE INEQUALITY - The big problem I have with the city and state budgets is that they look at tax hikes instead of wage/benefit reductions. Well, here is how the tax hikes are going to affect you. It really chafes me that the state leadership seems to think the only two choices are to cut important programs like social services and education, or raise our regressive Washington taxes like sales and property. How about wage and benefit freezes and cuts for higher paid workers and administration?
MY OTHER BEEF - EDUCATION SYSTEM BROKEN, SO START FIXING PROBLEMS - As we talked about earlier, I am not in favor of anymore levy or tax increases for education or any other government programs till we start looking at the root issues that have created this mess. We essentially spend more than we have on bloated salaries and benefits, and cannot afford to raise taxes on the working class anymore. In fact, even with the tax increases, we still have to get rid of teachers because unions will not fix their wage/benefit issues. So here is an article about the losses of the youngest and cheapest teachers, so we can keep the overpaid ones around. Sorry if I sound like a hater, but I just have to get to the heart of the issues.
THE MYTH OF HIGHER EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE AND PROFESSIONALISM - Finally, I'd like to comment on the current state of "them vs us", with "them" being anyone that is feeding of the government systems of education, health care and other government jobs, and the "us" being anyone not in those fields. With the insane cost of Education, and Health care driving our nation close to bankruptcy, it is time to have some fact finding on what is a fair and just wage for any particular government job. And on the other side, we need a progressive tax structure that allows us to tax those that fall into higher tax brackets more than those that struggle through the low wage, average jobs that are available to most. Without being honest about the state of need for workers because of efficiency and productivity gains, we will never be able to bring back balance to the process of being a functional part of society.

2ND ANNIVERSARY THIS WEEK, WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED? - Two years on the radio!! Thanks to KYRS, it's member, listeners and volunteers for the chance to host the show and discuss the issues that affect out lives. The idea of the show and the web site is to discuss, and make government on all levels work better. Obviously we are not in better shape than 2 years ago, so what went wrong?
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WE FACE? - From Feb 200 to now, what re the problems we face in America? Obviously the economy is #1. And as you all know, all other problems come from economic issues. Whether social, political or economics, every issue comes from lack of resources to solve problems. And our current unique problems are from 2 directions - government overspending, and misguided tax structure. But the real problem is that politicians work to get reelected as opposed to solving problems.
ARE THINGS GETTING BETTER OR WORSE? OR CAN THEY GET BETTER? - I'd like to ask if things are getting better, but really we all know the answer to that question. So the real question is "can things get better"? And why will the get better? What will be the forces that get things going the right directions? Or what are the forces that will push us farther down the hole?
TED2010: Ten fascinating people you've never heard of - Finally, I'm happy to spotlight 10 people that we should all know about, but have never had a chance to see. This list of 10 thinkers and innovators are the kind of people that we should all aspire to be. Check out this great article, and the video on the top of this weeks blog. This is the optimistic and hopeful part of this weeks blog.
